Past District Governors Ian Flint, Adolph Kaestner and Mike Levinrad pay tribute to this giant of Toastmasters in Southern Africa.
THE GIVER GIVES HIS LAST LESSON
Adrian Spruyt DTM joined Toastmasters in 1969 when there were but a few clubs in Southern Africa.
As a man with strong views and opinions he soon made his mark in the movement and after serving in his club and the then Council of Southern Africa he was elected as Chairman in 1976. This was just 2 years before we became a fully fledged District in 1978.
After serving on the Council Adrian immersed himself in the furthering of his own craft as a speaker and as an elder statesman to whom many Toastmasters (especially the ones in the Pretoria area (Division A)) turned for advice and guidance on all aspects of Toastmastering and the craft of speaking.
His true genius was however realised when he started getting involved in a multitude of Speechcraft and Youth Leadership courses run in and around Pretoria for the past 30 years. The number of students and aspiring business speakers with whom he shared his wisdom and tips are too many to count but we know that they will all be saying “Thanks and without you we would not be who we are today”.
As a member of the Past District Governors Advisory Council it was always Adrian that would calm things down when the hot heads and young turks got too excited and his calm and wise words were  certainly treasured by all of us who served with him.
With Adrian’s passing we say goodbye to the last of the active past Council Chairman of Southern African Toastmasters and with the extinguishing of that light we rejoice in the work that Adrian did for the movement, his friends and colleagues  and for the many people he touched in his journey to the PDG Meeting in the sky. Go well great and honoured Toastmaster – we thank and solute you and are better for having known you.
Adolph P. Kaestner
DEDICATED TO THE TOASTMASTERS ORGANISATION
Adrian was the driving disciplinarian behind the success of the Forum Toastmasters Club over the years. As a founder member, he was strict in his evaluations of both speaker and meeting agenda items and particularly critical of club executive members who failed in their responsibilities. As an example to his fellow club members he always had a solution or offered advice on how to improve the situation. Through his dedication and the wish that all would benefit and succeed in their Toastmaster ideals, he stood by his word and always offered his assistance in solving the problem.
A joke or humorous anecdote would always form part of his speaking assignments, usually to compliment the message or simply as an appropriate opening.
Forum Club was one of the most successful clubs in District 74 in the eighties and nineties, both in speaking and leadership achievements. This undoubtedly, due to the influence initiated by one Adrian Spruyt.
He will be sorely missed by his ex fellow club members at Forum and all in Division A, but more importantly remembered for his total dedication to the organisation, command of the English language and love for the spoken word.
Ian Flint
TOASTMASTERS WILL MISS ADRIAN SPRUYT
It is with great sadness that I just learned about the passing away of Adrian Spruyt whom I have known since pre-District 74 days.
It was at the convention of the South African Toastmasters Council which (I think) was in 1975 that Adrian was elected the National Chairman and he appointed me as the National Treasurer.
We have been great friends ever since. It is now 26 years since I moved from District 74 to District One and Adrian and I have been in contact with each other all this time until a year or two ago when ill health caught up with him.
Toastmasters will certainly miss Adrian Spruyt - I most definitely will.

District Governor's Address

I came! I saw! I was blown over!

The Toastmasters International Conference at the Cradle of Humankind, District 74, 14th – 16th April 2011

By Frances Kazan (almost ACS, ALB), www,franceskazan.co.za

Monday, 18th April 2011
What a conference – I was blown over, compelled to write it all down - not forget – and share the most memorable experiences with those who were unable attend.  To remind myself that a small team can make a difference as did Shaun Goodbrand and his team.   They certainly elicite their greatness together! They helped me grow to new and amazing heights.  It was definitely not a perfect conference - it was an excellent conference!!!

I left the place ‘where it all began’ feeling physically exhausted but emotionally inspired in a way that I have not felt for a very long time.  I felt encouraged to ‘evolve as a leader’ and hopefully by the next conference I would have paved my own footprint as the Governor of Division H.
